This training is approved for CE for social workers, counselors, and marriage and family therapists in the state of Ohio. This training is approved for chemical dependency counselors in domains C2 and C8.

Level of Course | 200 Intermediate

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is an evidence-based practice developed to increase people’s motivation to change through collaborative conversations in an environment of compassion and empathy. The primary objective of this training series is to teach individuals the technical and relational skills of MI within the framework of the latest 3rd edition of William R. Miller and Stephen Rollnicks’; Motivational Interviewing; Helping People Change. Participants will obtain general knowledge in the four processes of MI; engaging, evoking, focusing and planning. Upon completion, participants will have basic proficiencies in the following core skills: open ended questions, affirmations, empathic reflections, and summaries. Course participants will be able to ask questions via webinar chat during the Q&A portion of the course.


  1. To understand the underlying spirit and approach of MI.
  2. To recognize reflective listening responses and differentiate them from other counseling responses.
  3. To understand the concept of change talk.

Participants are required to stay logged-in for the Q&A portion of the training for successful completion, as it is part of the educational portion of this course.

Intensive Treatment Division Director at the Columbus Ohio Veterans Administration

Mr. Portner is the Director of the Intensive Treatment Division for the VA Central Ohio Healthcare System. This division specializes in the provision of evidence-based practices for Veterans with severe mental health conditions and substance use disorders. He also serves as a subject matter expert for the National Motivational Interviewing (MI) and Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET) program.


Evaluations will be distributed within 24 hours after the training via email. You will receive a link where you can submit the completed evaluation. Evaluations must be completed to receive CE credits. Certificates will be available to download once the once the evaluation is received.
