Homelessness and the Housing Crisis: Caring for Those Who are Left Behind

This training is approved for CE for social workers, counselors, and marriage and family therapists in the state of Ohio. This training is approved for chemical dependency counselors in domains C7 and prevention professionals in P2.

This course will explore how homelessness and the housing crisis are exploding in Ohio and across the nation. The program will look at historical factors that contributed to homelessness, characteristics of people who experience homelessness, why people become homeless, the role of systemic racism, how to respond effectively with people who experience homelessness , and how to get involved to reduce homelessness, both individually and collectively. Course participants will also be able to ask questions via webinar chat during the Q&A portion of the course.


  1. Identify the historical and structural factors contributing to the increase in homelessness.
  2. Understand the characteristics of homeless persons, including individuals and families.
  3. Respond to people who experience homelessness with compassion and competence.

Participants are required to stay logged-in for the Q&A portion of the training for successful completion, as it is part of the educational portion of this course.

Presented by Keith McCormish

Director of the Columbus Coalition for the Homeless

Keith McCormish serves as Director of the Columbus Coalition for the Homeless, which provides education, advocacy, and empowerment programs related to homelessness. He has been a social worker, administrator, and consultant in the social service field for many years. His experience as a social worker includes crisis counseling and case management in the mental health and recovery field and working with youth and families involved with the justice system. As an administrator he helped develop new programs and services for many organizations, primarily in mental health, recovery, housing, and healthcare. Keith formed a consulting firm in 2000 and helped organizations in central Ohio develop new programs and funding streams. He also helped several large nonprofits achieve CARF certification. He is currently the Board Chair for the Continuum of Care in Franklin County, which awards federal funding for homeless programs. He has a Bachelor’s degree in English from the Ohio State University and a Master’s degree in Public Administration from the University of Akron.


Evaluations will be distributed within 24 hours after the training via email. You will receive a link where you can submit the completed evaluation. Evaluations must be completed to receive CE credits. Certificates will be available to download once the once the evaluation is received.
